Axle the oh so handsome small black lab male, who is only about 40 pounds. He is only about a year and a half old. He was living in South Carolina when the Animal Control unit there got a call from someone saying that they had a dog at their house that was hit by a car. The persons who's yard Axel was lying in said that they did not know who the dog was nor did they know who the dog belonged to. Non-sense. It was their dog, and they didn't want to treat him. So animal control took him in and he had surgery FHO (left side) and he's doing great. He favors it when he runs, but gets around well. We've had him back to the vet to have it rechecked, healed fully. At times he runs on it like it's perfect, other times when he's running he hops a little. Could just take more time. House trained, great with kids and other dogs. He is up to date on all his shots, and neutered. What more could you want? He is just the perfect guy!

Hi I am Brown and I am one very very special guy! I was at a high kill shelter in South Carolina when my foster mom saw my sweet face . I was hours away from getting gassed when she read my story. It stated that I was a friendly boy, likes kids, dogs, etc. However no one was interested in me because I have a deformed front leg. Everyone would see me being happy in my kennel as they walked through the shelter. They would come up to meet me, and as soon as they saw my leg they would pass me over. My feelings got hurt but it never broke my spirit. I remained a happy guy just looking for my shot at a forever home. But like most dogs all our time must come to an end. Well my time was up. I could not believe that being only two years young my life would be cut short just because I could not find a home. The thought of going into a gas chamber scared me but I still held out hope that at my last hour someone would step up! Thank goodness my foster mom found me and now I am going to find that home.I am determined more then ever to show everyone how deserving I am at a second leash on life. I am neutered, up to date on all my shots, and ready. I did test heartworm positive which unfortunately is fairly common amongst dogs in the south. Home at Last will be treating my heartworms and those pesky worms will be gone! I hope that you give me a chance like my foster mom is! Adopt me!

My foster mom saw my face and could not believe that I was only hours away from being gassed at a high kill shelter in South Carolina. You see, I was part of an entire litter of puppies. Another rescue took all my siblings except me. I was found to have had an allergic reaction to a flea bite so because of a small skin infection they would not take me. I have been fully treated and my small skin infection is all better. I do well w/ cats and kids and I would really thrive in a home that has another dog because I can really be myself when there's another canine around! Destiny is just a wonderful 2-3 year old dog that just loves to be loved. She is great with other dogs and very good with cats. She plays gently with them and seems to enjoy the antics of kittens. She has an old, healed injury that makes her limp. An x-ray revealed she was shot and has shrapnel in her leg and we are waiitng for a specialist recommedation. The injury appears old so she may have a limp the rest of her life. She gets along just fine and is not in any pain. She is truly an underdog but needs a loving home just like the others. Destiny did test Heartworm positive but ahe was treated for those pesky worms and is recovered from that. She is up to date on all of her shots, spayed and ready to find her forever home!

Happy is a Happy boy. According to shelter staff, he is high on life. He barks at everyone and everything...tail going 90 miles an hour and rocking his body. No one can be sad when this guy is around. He is medium tall, and slender with a medium long coat. He was neutered yesterday and bounced off the van this morning as if to say, "Hello All, I'm back!!:))" He would totally restore your faith in the world. He is a a Senior dog at 10 years and therefore best for someone with the stability and resources to care for him in his Senior years. He will reward you 10 x in return for any love you can give. When you look at him he will begin to wag his tail and if you walk over lifts his legs in the air so you can rub his belly. He is afriad of the camera so I could not capture his true sweet demeanor as he was suspicous when he saw the camera. He and his friend Sandy were owned together by an elderly couple who were no longer able to care for them. They were owned by this same couple from puppyhood and always received all annual recommeded vet care and heartworm preventative. He is heartworm negative. He has no diagnosed medical problems but has a fatty mass on one arm that is purely cosmetic and cataracts that do not slow him down. He loves to have his ears rubbed and will wait patiently for some more love just staring lovingly into you eyes before laying on the floor to be near you. He will let you know if he is thirsty or needs to go out. Please contact me for more information or to meet Hobo. He is gentle and likes my young children. I love this dog! If you spend a few hours a day home when he could keep you company then you would be happy with this low energy dog. Kinsley is a beautiful 4-5 year old Great Pyrenees that was found at a high kill gassing shelter in South Carolina. Kinsley was an hour away from being gassed to death and no rescues had stepped up to save her. All the other dogs at the shelter had been saved except for her. Home At Last inquired about her to see why only she was left on their kill list. The shelter told us that she had a broken leg. We arranged a transport to get her to PA and when she arrived we were in shock to see how badly her leg was broken. This poor beautiful creature was given no pain medication and had been sitting on a cold cement floor at the high kill shelter all week with no medical attention. Immediately, we got her to the vet that gave her medication to numb her pain. After a consult it was recommended that she go to University of Pennsylvanian Veterinary hospital. There, Kinsley had to have emergency surgery and they had to put plates in her leg. Although the hospital gave Home At Last a discount it was still a large fee. The surgery itself cost the rescue close to $5,000.00 - and that does not include the follow up appointments, physical therapy or medications. Additionally we were given more sad news. Kinsley tested positive for heartworms and although very treatable, it is still a high cost for the rescue. We have set up a chip in for Kinsley to help pay for her treatment. Hi I am Oscar and I am a 1-2 year old Beagle mix of some sort. Sunny spots in my kennel and my kind furry roommates gave me lots of comfort here at the high kill shelter I was staying at in South Carolina. When I arrived there, I was extremely skittish and very thin. I have added on some much needed pounds and have also relaxed and maybe cracked a smile or two as folks stop by to say "hi." I am still guarded and cautious around folks but am really trying. I am a smaller framed, sleek jacketed fellow sporting a rich blonde coat with cream highlights. Now weighing a whopping 31 pounds compared to the 20 or so pounds I use to weigh. I used to shake like a leaf when folks would come near. The shaking has stopped and I am now darting near my visitors to sniff at their hands. This is huge progress in my book. Roger is a stunning Collie Mix Male. Just over a year old. At some point in his life he was hit by a car, and his hip broken. It healed on its own completely, but it is fused. He runs, plays and we've been told he's in no pain. Because of how it healed it's a hair shorter than it should be. If you're not looking, you really can't notice, but if you are looking, his gait is a bit off. He's had a few adopters interested in him, but then they realize he's not perfect and turn away. Our Adoption Process
Interested in adopting one of the dogs listed above? Here are the next steps:
Complete our online adoption application with the name of the dog you are applying for.
Have you previously submitted an application for a different dog? There’s no need to submit another one unless any of your other information has changed! Just send us an e-mail to let us know which dog you’re currently interested in.
We will review all applications for each dog in order to make a decision about which home best suits the dog’s needs. Applications are not considered in the order they are received; all applications will be considered in determining the best situation for each dog. Completing an adoption application is not a guarantee that you will receive the dog you are applying for, and Home At Last reserves the right to reject any application as we see fit.
We will call the Personal and Veterinary references you listed on the application and contact you to schedule a home visit. These checks are performed to ensure that you will be a responsible pet parent and that you will provide routine veterinary care for the dog as needed.
During a home visit, we will assess the living situation as well as the dog’s behavior, especially around any children or other pets you may have. If we feel that your home is the best situation for the dog, we will leave him/her there with you assuming you are prepared to receive your new dog. You will be asked to sign our Adoption Contract and a $275.00 adoption fee must be paid to Home At Last Dog Rescue, which is necessary to cover the cost of spaying/neutering, medicating, and transporting our dogs.
